The world of medicine has changed dramatically in our lifetimes.  Obviously, the most important changes have to do with the technology and ability to treat illness and disease with greater precision.  We have the ability to do less harm, and enable each other to live longer and healthier lives.  New techniques and discoveries happen every day, affecting how we do surgeries, use pharmaceuticals, and even how we think about healing.  At the same time, one of the most dynamic changes has been in terms of cost.  Even for those who have insurance, there are procedures which are simply cost prohibitive.  This is where medical tourism comes in.  When someone wants or needs to have a medical treatment, and can find better care that’s also more affordable in another country, then it’s a very reasonable alternative.

Sometimes it’s not even an alternative, but the only choice.  For many people living in border states in the U.S. for example, the cost of extensive and complicated dental work is much higher now than it used to be.  When someone needs a root canal in Phoenix, and the local cost is over $2,000 even with insurance, it makes sense to cross the border to Mexico where you can get the same procedure for a fraction of the cost.  There are also plenty of stories about elderly people living close to borders, where the cost of long-term prescription drugs is much cheaper in the country next door.  For many people living in the world now, it’s not an option but simply a way of life.

There are other, more complex procedures, too.  Places like the Medical Tourism Association can help to hook people up with the right doctors in the right countries.  There are many countries these days that offer the same medical procedures at vastly different prices.  The difference can be so great, in fact, that it makes more sense to travel to Germany for an operation than to have it done locally.  There are also other optional procedures, such as hair implants, or collagen enhancements, that can be performed for fractions of the costs.  Until there is a health care system that is capable of handling the needs of the citizens, this will be an increasingly more popular, and necessary, phenomenon.
