How to Medical Tourism for Dummies

It used to be, back in the old days, when you got sick, you went to your family doctor.  Someone who had known you for years and in many cases, someone who has watched you grow up.  If you needed something like a surgery or a special procedure, they referred you to a specialist, someone that they had worked with many years.  There was a local hospital, and when you went in for a procedure, your family and friends came to visit and support you in your speedy recovery.

Now though, it’s becoming a different world, as people are traveling the world to get the health care that they need.  In some cases, this is the only way to have necessary procedures done if one does not have health insurance.  For others who do have insurance, it is still less expensive to travel and have the procedures done in other countries.  In some cases it is for elective procedures, and in other cases it is as serious as a triply bypass surgery.

Health care costs are spiraling, and many great hospitals in countries like Thailand, Vietnam, Romania and India, are growing due to the medical tourism industry.  Some people get a bit nervous when thinking of going to a country like India for such procedures, perhaps thinking of the cities of the country seem not well equipped, so how can the hospitals be.  Some of the finest hospitals in the world are found in Thailand and India.

The first step to take is either going online and searching, or asking for recommendations from people who you know have traveled for health care.  Now there are even websites that are designed to help you look, sites that list information on where to go and how to do it.  Once you find the hospital and schedule the surgery, it is like any other vacation, almost.  You book your flight.  You choose a hotel that will be relaxing as you will spend a bit of timerecuperating depending on the procedure or the surgery.  Then, you do just that, you relax and you heal.
