Health Tourism in Latin America

Health tourism is a growing and thriving industry in the world, and one that seems to be showing no signs of slowing down. There are plenty of good reasons for traveling across borders for medical care and other forms of healthful living. These certainly include economic motivations, where the same procedures and treatments are offered by medical professionals who are just as qualified, and sometimes even more so, than in one’s home country. But it’s not only limited to economics. There are often reasons for traveling because there are services offered in only a select few countries, or cities. If there is one particular doctor or healer that has an international reputation, then people from around the word will come. All these reasons, and more, are just some of the reasons why Latin America is a particularly attractive spot for modern health tourism.

It’s hard to look the tourism part of the equation, however, when looking at Latin America. It’s always been a popular vacation spot for people in the U.S. and Canada, because of proximity, among Europeans for its reputation in the world, and also among other Latin Americans. Its benefits as a tourist spot are probably obvious, with its relatively low cost of living, as well as all of the countries’ vast array of attractions, like beaches, lively cities, and archeologically interesting sites. In the field of medicine, and alternative medicine in particular, it has something over the rest of the world. The unique histories of place here often mean that there are strong indigenous populations, and these healing traditions are practiced by traditional peoples, and a growing number of doctors of so-called Western medicine. These non-traditional treatments, ironically, are actually more traditional than most forms of medicine practiced more widely in western countries.

There are also countries that offer elective procedures, such as plastic surgeries, augmentations, and hair transplants, that are much more cost effective than in other places. Some countries, like Mexico, also offer affordable dental procedures that are cost-prohibitive in other parts of the world. There are also plenty of very good doctors who can perform routine surgical procedures that are more affordable, or in a location that is simply more suitable for a more pleasant recovery.
